Aims: Treatments for depression include antidepressant medicines, psychological (talking) therapy or a combination of the two. If the depression is severe and does not respond to other treatments, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be used. ECT involves applying an electric current to the brain. The technique involves placement of a small coil over the scalp; a rapidly alternating current is then passed through the coil wire, producing a magnetic field that passes through the brain. The application of the magnetic field may be used to either stimulate or inhibit specific areas of the brain.
